Zanussi's early masterpiece that opened the door to the international film industry is known for its complex and alienated forms and introspective propositions. Through the process of the male protagonist who is determined to enter the physics department of a well-known university, he will fall in love, drop out of school, escape from the world and return to the system, constantly exploring conflicts and dialectics in life, spirit and thought, and wandering between spirituality and reality, freedom and responsibility. It not only reflected the state of mind of young Polish intellectuals at the time, but also established the underlying theme of Zanussi's future works.
