In 1821, in the Diamantina Mountains of Brazil, the slave trader António returned to a large and shabby farm. His wife died in childbirth, and he and his insane mother-in-law were confined to this desolate place with a group of black slaves. He married Beatriz, his dead wife's 12-year-old niece. The restless António once again traveled with the caravan, but his young wife Beatriz did not know how to get along with the black slaves...
