Bluebeard's Eighth Wife

The entire story of "Bluebeard's Eighth Wife" is a mockery of the Puritan social ethos: since the clean-up movement in the film industry is in full swing, and even married couples who have gone through formal formalities at the Marriage Registration Office are deprived of the right to sleep in the same bed, it would be better to make a scene in which the wife refuses to consummate the marriage, to ensure that there is no danger of violating taboos. The wealthy male protagonist, who has a record of seven glorious marriages, finally overcame all difficulties to pursue the woman of his dreams. However, although the suspicious eighth wife is willing to get married, she feels that he will never believe that she married into a wealthy family for anything other than money, so she insists on keeping her virginity and will not fulfill her obligations as a wife in bed until it is proven that he no longer has doubts about her sincerity. The scene of taking off one’s pants and farting would have been disastrous if handled by another director, but when Lubitsch cooked it, it was a delicacy with all colors, flavors and tastes - "unnecessary" even became a sarcastic comment on the poor and ridiculous male protagonist.
