Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors

The film is adapted from Kotyubinsky's lyrical novel of the same name. The director broke up the plots into "Ivan and Marichka", "Polonina", "Loneliness", "Ivan and Baragna", "Everyday Life", "Christmas", "Spring is Tomorrow", "Thunderstorm", "Little Hotel", "Death of Ivan", "Pious Ceremony", etc. The 11 units tell the unforgettable love tragedy between the protagonist Ivan: first, the heroine Marichika unfortunately fell into the river and died while searching for Ivan, and then the other heroine Balagna betrayed Ivan. The story finally ended with Ivan's death at the hands of his love rival. This film is a typical poetic film. It uses a unique style to show the scene of the nation exploring the path of survival, and to peek into the activities and changes of the nation's inner consciousness. The film masterfully blends delicate documentary scenes with gorgeous baroque visual effects. Through the emotional guidance of the protagonist, the whirlpool narrative method shuttles between fantasy and reality. The camera seems to be possessed, taking the audience into their mysterious dream. The film was banned after its release, but was soon lifted under pressure.
