15-year-old high school student Mia (Anne Hathaway) lives with her mother in the United States, but she is very unsure of herself and is often laughed at by her classmates. On her 16th birthday, she met her grandmother (Julie Andrew) and discovered that this elegant lady was the queen of the small European country of Genovia, and Mia was the princess of this country.
