In Kobe, Japan in the early Showa era, the ordinary streets were inhabited by Meio's family of four who ran a tailor shop. The head of the family, Morio (played by Yutaka Mizutani), is amiable and enlightened; the Christian housewife Toshiko (played by Ran Ito) is clever and ingenious and manages everything in the house. The eldest son Hajime (played by Yoshioka Tatsuki) puts on a sweater with English letters knitted by his mother and is called Boy H by his friends. His younger sister Yoshiko (played by Hanada Yuriin) is smart, naughty and lovable. Frequent contact with foreigners makes Meiwei's family more tolerant in dealing with others. However, as the international situation becomes increasingly tense, the lives of ordinary Japanese people have also been greatly affected. Some were arrested as thought criminals, while others committed suicide for evading military service. As the situation in World War II intensified, young H looked at this cruel world that was undergoing rapid changes with stunned eyes... This film is adapted from the autobiographical novel of the same name by the stage design master Meio Kappa.
